You may see options to hibernate or sleep when you click the Start button followed by Power. Sometimes you will want the computer to sleep, sometimes to hibernate to save battery. Maintenance can be performed while sleeping, but not in hibernation. However, a computer in sleep mode can be scheduled to automatically wake to perform tasks like checking for emails, syncing, backing up and then it will automatically go back to sleep.
